The Captain’s Role
The primary responsibilities of the Captain include the vessel’s seaworthiness, the safety of the vessel and its crew and passengers. The Captain is in command of the operation, navigation, crew management, and ensuring that the vessel complies with local and international laws, as well as any company and state regulations. In short, the Captain of a vessel has a lot more responsibility than just driving.
Professional Captains licensing ranges from a “six-pack” to a “Master Unlimited”. There are years of training, education, certifications, and on-the-water hours needed just to become licensed. There is also specialized education, certifications, and additional hours on the water required to perform certain tasks on a vessel and to be able to operate in different environments and conditions.
